Mechanical Design Manager at Unbox Robotics

About Unbox Robotics
We at Unbox Robotics are revolutionizing warehouses and distribution centers by building the world's most compact, powerful, and flexible mobile robotics systems for the new age of warehousing. Our product is the World's 1st of its kind AI-powered parcel sorting robotic system that gets installed 10X faster, saves 50+% space and improves productivity by more than 3X with 50% fewer robots than that of the competition. Founded in 2019, we are backed by marquee investors and angels. We are looking to add to our team of thinkers, innovators and doers and would love to have you join us at the Pune, India office and build the future of on-demand robotics logistics solutions

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical design of robots and peripheral structures across the full product range, from POC through production and sustaining phases, in alignment with cross-functional teams
  • Personally take on complex design problems, exercising strong engineering judgment on design methods, materials, and validation for reliable, manufacturable solutions
  • Perform and review aggregate calculations, component and material selection, CAD models, drawings, tolerance stack-up, and structural and multibody dynamics analysis, guiding decisions from FEA results
  • Own the engineering specification, development timeline, validation, and release of components, modules, and assemblies, and run internal design reviews with clear documentation and risk closure
  • Review and approve design improvements, technical drawings, and manufacturing release packages, supported by analysis and test data
  • Communicate design intent to vendors using 3D CAD, 2D drawings, GD&T, and specifications (applying DFM, DFA, and DFMEA), and collaborate with them to develop and scale components and prototypes into production
  • Drive improvements in quality, cost, manufacturability, and efficiency across the lifecycle, and lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for prototype, production, and field issues
  • Drive IP generation from the team's work: identify patentable innovations, author and review invention disclosures, and maintain disclosure hygiene and documentation discipline
  • Build, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical design engineers, setting technical direction, growing capability, and supporting hiring, onboarding, and performance development
  • Plan and allocate work across projects, balancing resources and priorities to meet delivery commitments
  • Own end-to-end program and project delivery: budgets, costs, timelines, and milestones across multiple projects, driving accountability for on-time, on-cost outcomes
Requirements
  • Strong capability in aggregate calculations and first-principles problem-solving, with proven engineering judgment on complex challenges
  • Expertise in CAD, preferably Solid Edge, with deep knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Hands-on experience designing primary structures, mechanisms, tools, jigs, and fixtures, with strong working knowledge of solid mechanics, load cases, and failure mechanisms
  • Strong experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal, casting, injection moulding, and welding, and proven capability designing with a wide range of materials while optimizing for cost, weight, durability, strength, and thermal performance; composites experience is a plus
  • Structural analysis and multibody dynamics experience, with a clear understanding of how tools such as Ansys and Adams work, the ability to define correct inputs, and the judgment to interpret outputs accurately
  • Experience in mass-production component development and creating engineering documentation such as BoMs, SOPs, release notes, and change records
  • Experience working with reliability and quality teams to conduct FMEAs, execute design validation test plans, and bring subsystems and components into production
  • Familiarity with Design Thinking principles for innovation, ideation, and concept generation
  • Awareness of IP fundamentals in a hardware context: recognising patentable subject matter, contributing to invention disclosures, and maintaining confidentiality and documentation discipline
  • Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholder teams
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute and lead technical work on large-scale engineering projects, mentor engineers, and develop standard work practices
Good to Have
  • Experience in electro-mechanical product development across robotics, industrial automation, automotive, or similar high-precision hardware
  • Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards applicable to industrial machinery and automated systems
  • Certifications or formal training in Design Thinking
  • Demonstrated habit of staying connected with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical design
  • Named inventor on patents or patent applications, or demonstrated contributions to IP and innovation
Eligible Candidates
  • Bachelors or Masters in Mechanical Engineering (or Automotive, Aerospace) from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institute
  • 5 to 8 years of relevant industry experience covering the full product development cycle
  • Minimum 2 years of technical leadership experience
We Value
  • A player-coach who leads by example and lifts the team's technical bar
  • Constant learner with drive to become a Subject Matter Expert
  • Proven record in start-up environment working with innovations
  • Ability to conduct detailed procedures in a time-constrained environment
